In wake of the anonymous threat letters to members of the Sikh community in the Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) accused the ruling alliance of National Conference (NC) and Congress of giving a “communal twist” in order to divert attention from their own failures.

“People, particularly the youth, should beware of the mischievous antics of the National Conference and Congress leaders who have been trying to divert the attention of the people from their utter failure to save a sinking ship by giving a communal twist to the prevailing situation in the state”, said Bhim Singh, chairman of the JKNPP.

For the past few days, Sikhs living in Kashmir have been receiving anonymous threat letters at Guruduwaras and at homes, triggering panic among the community. Singh said that Muslims in Kashmir have always demonstrated will to maintain communal harmony.

“Composite culture is an essential part of Kashmiriyat. Kashmiri Muslims have always stood for maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood. Minorities, particularly the Sikh fraternity, are also responsible for upholding the secular bonds in the state and particularly in the Valley”, said Singh.

JKNPP has three legislators in the 87-member legislative assembly and has been a vociferous critic of the ruling alliance for its approach to deal with the current crisis in the Valley. Singh urged the J&K governor NN Vohra to use his powers and take over the responsibility of governance for some time. “The governor of J&K should now intervene and take over the responsibilities of the government for some time, as given under Section 92 of the Constitution of J&K”, he said.

Under fire, J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah said he was proud of the secular credentials of the people of Kashmir, who have always withstood onslaughts from mischievous forces who make futile attempts to create a wedge between different communities.

“The world recognises the secular character of the inhabitants of the Valley, where people belonging to different faiths live with love and affection. Letters typed on computers and then printed for distribution by one or two mischievous people should not be construed as the voice of majority”, he said, while interacting with the Sikh delegation.

Omar said that precautions were required to be taken by the forward-thinking people of all communities to thwart the ill designs of mischievous elements bent upon breeding hatred in the Valley, which has been living in spiritual atmosphere for centuries.
