Jammu and Kashmir to promote Sanskrit

Sanskrit will be promoted in Jammu and Kashmir as part of its socio-cultural ethos, a state minister said today. "Buddhism has played an important role in socio-cultural ethos of J&K. The state is committed to promote the language of Sanskrit as it is a part of its socio-cultural ethos," education minister Peerzada Mohammad Syeed said while delivering the key note address at the 9th annual conference of Indian Society for Buddhist Studies (ISBS) here.

Riyaz Punjabi, vice chancellor of University of Kashmir, that organised the three-day conference, starting today, in collaboration with the Indian Society of Buddhist Studies New Delhi, said the state had hosted the event after a gap of 2000 years. It hosted the 4th international Buddhist conference during the rein of Kanashika, he said adding the state has valuable resources in Sharda and Pali languages.

On the occasion, books like the tri-lingual Annual Research Journal "Padma Parag", 'Ocean of Buddhist Wisdom' and 'A critical Appraisal of Truth: Buddhism and Pragmatism' were released.
