Jamia Millia Islamia faculty members and administrative staff today staged a dharna here pressing the government to grant minority status to the university in clear terms to allow the institute reserve 50% of seats in each course for Muslim students.

Members of Jamia Teachers' Association (JTA), Jamia Administrative Association and Jamia Minority Status Coordination Committee held the dharna at Jantar Mantar to press for their demand of recognising the university as a minority educational institution in clear terms.

"We want the government to recognise Jamia Millia Islamia as a minority educational institution in clear terms," JTA president NU Khan said, adding, "ambiguities remain in the minority status that the university enjoys at present".

Khan said if their demand is accepted then 50% of the university seats will be reserved for Muslims.

Jamia, a central university, is yet to initiate the process of implementing OBC reservation quota as asked repeatedly by the University Grants Commission.

"Reserving 50% seats for Muslim students will leave the rest 50% for general category. And its implementation will do away with other types of reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC)," Khan added.

He said colleges like St Stephens and Khalsa also enjoy minority status.
