Death of an infant as the bus rushing it to the hospital was waylaid and attacked by protesters, rocked both Houses of Jammu and Kashmir legislature today as the State Assembly asked the state government to issue a statement on the incident and look into the factors that led to it.

"I direct the government to make a statement regarding the incident in which an 11-day-old infant died in the wake of stone pelting by an unruly mob when the mother was travelling in a passenger carrier from Dangiwachi to Baramulla", Jammu and Kashmir Assembly speaker MA Lone said.

Lone also asked the state government to look into the circumstances leading to the incident and sought a complete report from it on the identity of the infant as members, cutting across party lines, condemned the incident.

The leaders who condemned it in the assembly included PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti and Congress Chief Whip Gulam Ahmed Mir who said the state government should ensure that such incidents do not happen in future.

After 20 minutes of noisy scences in the House, the PDP staged a walkout over the issue with Mehbooba terming it as "most unfortunate incident which reflected failure of the law and order machinery of Omar Abdullah government.

The issue dominated the Zero Hour in the Legislative Council as well with members including Mohammad Rashid Qureshi, Altaf Ahmad Wani, Ghulam Qadir Pardesi and Murtiza Ahmad Khan condemning the incident and demanding strong action against the perpetrators.
