Shillong: Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair, chief mentor of Infosys NR Narayana Murthy, sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and former chief election commissioner JM Lyngdoh were today conferred honorary doctorate degrees by the North Eastern Hill University during the eight convocation of the varsity.

The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science was awarded to Nair for his outstanding contribution in the field science. Former chiefelection commissioner, J M Lyngdoh, who hails from Meghalaya, was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters for his efficiency in the field of administration.

The Honorary degree of Doctor of Science was given to NR Narayana Murthy for his outstanding contribution in the field of Information Technology and the degree of Doctor of Letter was given to Ustad Amjad Ali Khan as a distinguished Sarod maestro, for which he is popularly known as the Sarod Samrat.

Both these honorary degrees were given in absentia. Earlier, addressing the convocation, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, R Chidambaram said choosing the right technologies could put India on the path of rapid development.

"But there are technology areas like Atomic Energy, Space and IT Software, where the world no longer views India as a developing country, " Chidambaram said. Calling for large scale industrialisation on one hand and stressing on the need to have effective rural technology on the other, Chidambaram said, "All this will require introduction of innovations in all areas of development."

He expressed optimism that India would become a "developed country" sooner rather than later, "if all of us put our act together."

Addressing the students as chief rector of the University, Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary quoted from the Upanishads to say that while kings are respected in their respective kingdoms, scholars are held in esteem the world over.
