With Supreme Court ordering stay on the proceedings of the Ishrat Jahan encounter case in Gujarat high court, there are question marks over the fate of the HC-appointed special investigation team (SIT) probing the genuineness of the encounter. The SIT has already sought three-month extension from the HC to conclude the probe.

The probe, in fact, is going on a rather slow pace. Earlier, the SIT had planned to interrogate DG Vanzara, former crime branch DCP, and NK Amin, former DySP. Both the cops are in jail in connection with Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.

Highly-placed sources said the SIT was about to seek court's permission to interrogate Vanzara and Amin. The latest development may, however, stall the SIT plans. The sources said the SIT was leaving no room for doubt in its interrogation and even video recording the deposition of the witnesses.

Pramod Kumar, additional DG of police who is heading the SIT, said, "We will act according to the court's order."

Three months back, justice KS Jhaveri of Gujarat HC had set up an SIT to probe the encounter of Ishrat Jahan, a girl from Mumbra in Thane, and three others. The encounter happened near Kotarpur water works and the four, allegedly on a mission to kill chief minister Narendra Modi, were gunned down by crime branch sleuths.

On Monday, the Supreme Court stayed the case proceedings in Gujarat high court. The apex court will further hear the case on December 7.

Shamima Kaushar, Ishrat's mother, has claimed that the encounter was fake and has moved a petition in the high court seeking investigation by CBI in the case. A report by metropolitan magistrate SP Tamang, who conducted judicial probe in the case, has generated more controversy as it said that the cops had actually gunned down Ishrat and three others in cold blood.
