As many as 80 scholars from 23 countries discussed the intangible heritage of the tribals, nomads and the de-notified tribes of India, a day before the scheduled two-day ‘Bhasha-Vasudha’ event in Vadodara on Saturday and Sunday. The scholars discussed the languages and culture of these tribes.
Dr GN Devy, founder of Bhasha Research and Publication Center, told DNA over phone, that Bhasha got the idea of working on the intangible heritage after seeing the condition of the migratory labourers who lost their identity totally once they migrated.

Devy, however, emphasised that the scholars should go for a reality check rather than just sit and talk about the intangible heritage. Subsequently, a group of scholars were taken to a locality of the Dowi Gosai community in Vadodara to study their current situation and understand the language they speak.

‘Bhasha Vasudha’ is hosted by Bhasha and will mark participation of representatives of languages from all parts of India as well as from other countries and linguists and language activists from all states and union territories of India.

“The event is unprecedented in scale in history as no time in the past and in no country in the world, representatives of nearly 900 languages have come together on a common platform. The meet will feature languages belonging to nearly 22 language families,” Devy said.

Dr Vibha Puri Das, secretary, Union HRD ministry, will be the chief guest for the programme. The ambassador of Argentina to India will also be present on the occasion. “Chancellors and vice-chancellors of several universities are also expected to participate in the conference. Over six hundred scholars, linguists and writers from across the country will join the global languages meet,” he said.
