Many institutes have prospered due to the nurturing given by their faculties. Many had lost faculties to corporate houses who gave better packages.
The imminent entry of foreign universities in the country, with the bill cleared in Parliament on Monday all set to become a law, has made the task of retaining faculties one of the prime concerns of institutes.
The top of the line are the premier institutes like the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, National Institute of Design (NID) and National Institute of Fashion & Technology (NIFT).
Each of these institutes, which currently lead the rankings in their area of specialisation, have prospered due to the nurturing given by their faculties in their niche areas.
These institutes have lost quite a few faculties and are already competing with corporate houses in giving better pay packages and exciting job profiles to their faculties.
However those educators interested in pursuing an academic career in India had limited options. But with the advent of international universities, the market opens up like never before.
Take IIM-A for instance. At one point between 2001 and 2002, a whopping 50 faculty members had resigned from the institute for corporate careers. That number has reduced gradually in the past few years, but not before the institute had to undertake drastic measures. In 2007, consulting fees sharing norms were eased to benefit the faculties and more time was given for research and publishing international papers. Today, the faculty strength is around 95, and increasing steadily every year. But the required number is 120.
How to bridge this gap, without increasing it further, is one of the biggest challenges for the heads of these institutes today. "We do not know what kind of pressures we will face in retaining our faculty so it will be difficult to say right now what we will do. A lot will depend on what kind of compensation they are willing to offer," director of IIM-A Samir Barua told DNA on Tuesday.
Director of NID Pradyumna Vyas said, "Money is not the only issue in NID. We have a very strong culture in the institute and we believe in it. In all these years, we have evolved with a strong contextual education programme along with various facilities which not only benefits the students but also the faculties in terms of knowledge. For example, the different areas we are researching in, the laboratories that we have and the strong associations and collaboration with various institutes and universities across the globe open our faculties and students to a wide spectrum of opportunities."
