Launching a sharp attack on the UPA government at the Centre, CPI(M)General Secretary Prakash Karat today said infighting among its alliance partners had virtually paralysed the administration.
He said UPA lacks majority in Parliament and gets support from outside the alliance. "The UPA government is enveloped in corruption and under its rule, prices of essential commodities have touched a new high," he told a CPI(M) rally here as part of the valedictory of the party's state conference.
Karat said many UPA partners did not agree with Congress on many policies and that conflict and infighting have led to "total paralysis" of the government.
Lambasting the UPA government's neo-liberal economic policies, he alleged that the worst affected was the agriculture sector, where thousands of farmers had committed suicide in the country during the last three years.
Noting that UPA government has 'no time' to address the grievances of the working class, he said its decision to throw open the retail sector to multinationals by allowing FDI would adversely affect thousands of small traders and businessmen in the country.
He said CPI(M), in association with other Left parties, would launch a mass movement to prevent multinationals from opening their retail outlets.
Noting that BJP can never be an alternative to UPA government, Karat said CPI(M) would continue its efforts to present a Left Democratic alternative to the people.
"Our aim is to wage a struggle against the neo liberal economic policies of UPA while ensuring steps to isolate BJP and RSS, which represent communal and Hindutva forces in the country," he said.
Referring to the defeat of Left Front in West Bengal in the last assembly polls, he said it was due to coming together of various forces.
"People who think CPI(M) in West Bengal is finished are mistaken," he said.
CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, Opposition leader and party veteran VS Achuthanandan also addressed the rally.
