In a shocking reminder that Baby Falak-like cases have not stopped in the country, now Bangalore has a shameful tale to tell. A three-month-old baby, Neha Afreen, was allegedly battered by her father who wanted a baby boy instead.
Baby Neha is now battling for life at Vani Vilas Hospital, after sustaining serious head injuries and suffering from trauma when her father, Umar Farooq, 37, battered her head with a blunt object at his residence in KG Halli on Thursday night.
Shockingly, this is not the first time that the baby was targeted by Farooq. He had tried to kill his daughter at least thrice before, police said. Baby Neha’s mother and Farooq’s second wife, Reshma Banu, had informed her parents about Farooq’s behaviour. They advised her to leave him for a few days, hoping that he would cool down, the police said.
His cruelty towards his daughter was influenced by the birth of a baby boy to one of his close relatives. He has been harassing Reshma ever since for giving birth to a girl. The two were married in December 2010.
Reshma said the latest attack on Baby Neha by her husband happened on Thursday night. She said Farooq returned home in the evening drunk and quarreled with her. He then stuffed the baby’s mouth with a cloth and battered her head with a blunt object. He then ran away.
Reshma and a few neighbours rushed the baby to the nearest private hospital. But noticing the serious nature of injuries on the baby’s head, the doctors suggested they take her to Vani Vilas Hospital.
Baby Neha is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit since the past three days and is battling for survival.
