Experts gathered at a programme on 'Harnessing Intellectual Property for Strategic Competitive and Collaborative Advantage' at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Tuesday believe that it is time for an alliance between industries and academic institutions. Director, Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh Dr Girish Sahni who is credited with two major licensing deals in the pharma sector, delivered the keynote
address at the event.

Dr Sahni was speaking on the subject 'Converting Biosimilars into 'Bioleaders': Opportunities and Challenges in the Biotech arena at the IIMA. He said it is time for a marriage between industry and institutes and added, "There is a need for the Indian industries to show confidence in scientists. And also take risks associated with research and scientists as Indian industries are not cash-trapped. They are rich, in fact," he said.

The team led by Dr Sahni at IMTECH, after lots of research, developed low-cost clot busters which also prevent re-occlusion. Nostrum Pharmaceuticals, the US, has obtained the worldwide licence to develop and commercialise the third and fourth generation thrombolytic molecules developed by the IMTECH team.

Dr Sahni also suggested that it is not important to have great infrastructure to invent. "I believe, infrastructure is important at a later stage — at the time of development. Young scientists should make a decision to where do they want to take their research. There are so many industries," he said.

Dr Anil Gupta of IIMA said, despite the limited infrastructure and with Indian resources, it is not impossible to generate global leadership in biotech. "There is a lesson to be learnt from the deals Dr Sahni has generated — it shows the face of Indian Biotech and suggests how in Indian conditions, with Indian resources, we can secure Intellectual Property Rights which gets global recognition."
