Claiming that Indo-Bangla relations have reached new heights after Sheikh Hasina-led government came to power in Bangladesh, minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor has said India is "strongly" committed to the neighbouring country's economic development.

"India is strongly committed towards Bangladesh's economic development and the prosperity of their people. We see Bangladesh's success as an investment in our own security and prosperity," Tharoor told PTI here last night.

Tharoor is here on a two-day visit to attend an international seminar on 'From Landlocked to Landbuilt: North East India in BIMSTEC' at the North East Hill University.

He said the visit of prime minister Sheikh Hasina to India recently "marked a new increase in momentum in the friendship between the two countries".

"We have found there had been tremendous increase not only in the actual co-operation, but also a wonderful improvement in the spirit of cooperation. So in every respect, I would say that the state, the health and the prospect of Indo-Bangladesh relationship have been very good," he said.

Asked what significant gains India has received out of the cooperation, Tharoor said, "Sometimes, in such relationships it is best not to speak of what one gets and what one gives."
