An incident of burglary was reported in the Vejalpur area on Thursday night. The victims, a couple living in Trustnagar, alleged that a thief broke into their house at a time when everyone was asleep and stole cash and valuables collectively amounting to Rs1 lakh.

In her complaint to the Vejalpur police, Anusuya Panchal, victim, stated that an unidentified man broke into the house sometime between 12 pm and 3 am, opened their cupboard and stole cash and valuables amounting to a total of Rs1 lakh. It was only the next morning, when Panchal saw the grill of the back door of the house broken and valuables and cash missing, that she lodged a complaint with the police.

The items stolen from the house were a watch, a mobile phone, gold bangles, gold earrings, gold necklace, two mangalsutras and a gold ring. A source said that the thief also stole AU$12,000, which the couple had kept in the chest. The Vejalpur police officials said that the thief adopted a very simple modus operandi. He broke the grill of the back door of the house after which he quietly entered the victims’ bedroom. He then opened the cupboard with keys he found in the room and fled from the place after stealing cash and valuables.

PI MC Patel of Vejalpur police station told DNA, “The couple was so fast asleep that they did not hear anybody enter the room,” Patel also said that the couple, who frequently visit a relative in Australia, are based in Ahmedabad. He also ruled out the possibility of the thief using any sort of chemical substance to put the victims to sleep.” The Vejalpur police said that they are investigating the matter.
