It may be a place torn apart by strife and tension but love still triumphs in Kashmir. Love marriages are on the rise as couples make the transition from being college sweethearts to life partners with relative ease.

There is, however, a difference in relationships as compared to those in metro cities. The start of an affair usually between those of 18 to 24 years begins with a commitment to be together for life.

The mingling of couples is a common sight at the universities and colleges in the valley. The common hangouts? Two of the most scenic locations of Kashmir—the botanical gardens near the Dal Lake and the Nazim park (couples call it ‘Taqdeer Park’) near the Hazaratbal Shrine. Engagements are often conducted at these places but just among the families.

Junaid* a management student said, “Times are a-changing. Due to the technological advancements I would speak to my girl friend on the phone for around 11 hours. During that period I had to change two phones as the batteries conked up due to the heavy usage.”

The recent high usage of the internet among the younger generation is another tool that’s helping couples. Students updating their Facebook status while doing ordinary activities like travelling or waiting in a doctor’s clinic are a routine sight. Among the groups those who don’t want to commit themselves to a permanent relationship are called as ‘roogs’, (unwanted elements).

Yawar Kabli* a media professional married his wife Sunaina* (name changed) whom he met during the militancy days. It was during one of their conversations on their landlines that his mother caught them.

“For many years the parents did not agree but in 2003 finally the taafa (pre-engagement) ceremony took place and marriage was solemnised last year,” he said.
