In quest for a new social justice order

As part of this effort, a colloquium is being held at IIMA on October 28 and 29 to launch a new International Social Justice Network.

With middle-income countries such an India, China and Brazil among others moving up the ladder, there is an urgent need to bring in more resources of the state to promote social justice and reduce inequality.

Though the government in many of these countries have accepted the need to promote social justice and have even come up with policies for the same, more needs to be done. As part of this effort, a colloquium is being held at IIMA on October 28 and 29 to launch a new International Social Justice Network.

A group of senior policy makers and opinion formers from India, Brazil, China, South Africa, Mexico and the UK are being invited for the same. The colloquium, being organised by the British Council under its International Dialogue Project, is in partnership with the IIMA and Indian Council for Social Science Research.

The British Council with its 250 offices in 110 countries has an unrivalled global network in governments and civil society and can bring together an international network of policymakers to facilitate the sharing of ideas and experiences.  The colloquium will focus on two themes - improving livelihood and access to quality universal primary and secondary education and healthcare.

The colloquium is also an opportunity to decide upon a plan to build the network through future face-to-face encounters and through internet. Professor Anil Gupta from IIMA will be co-ordinating the event for Ahmedabad. The colloquial will see several workshops throughout the two-day event including one titled 'Question Time with IIMA students.

Some of the speakers at the event will include Gerard Lemos, Austin Williams, and Jonathan Douglas from the UK, Anil Gupta and Andre Beteille from India and Frederico Gaunais from Brazil.
