A five-year-old brain-dead girl’s kidneys were transplanted on her father at Chennai government hospital on Thursday.

Janani, the daughter of Chandrasekharan, was brought to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday after she had an accident near Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh.

The girl, who had suffered head injuries, was declared brain dead at 12.47am on Wednesday. After a second formal declaration, doctors sought permission from the girl’s parents to harvest her organs and they agreed. When doctors learnt that the father was a kidney patient, they did compatibility tests and decided to use her kidneys on him.

“The surgery began at 9am and went on for three hours. It was successful and the girl’s father is doing fine. His parameters are stable. It is common for blood relatives — sibling or children — to donate their kidneys. However, it’s rare to find a parent who is a recipient,” hospital dean Dr J Mohanasundaram said.

“The father had been treated in our hospital earlier, so we knew his medical history. He was admitted on Wednesday and we performed the surgery on Thursday. Janani’s mother was upset at her death, but she was satisfied that her daughter’s kidneys could help her husband lead a near-normal life,” he said. Janani’s parents have now agreed to also donate her liver, heart valves and eyes.
