When Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi sits on one-day Sadbhavna fast in Godhra on Friday, more than 25 Muslim leaders,  including Muftis, Imams and community leaders, will join him on the stage for the fast. Modi’s Godhra Sadbhavna fast is different from his other fasts so far, because Godhra was the epicenter of 2002 communal riots.

Sources in the BJP said on the condition of anonymity that several Muftis had already registered their names to sit with the chief minister for the fast. A Mufti, who registered his name to sit with Modi on the stage, said:  “I am respected as a judge in my community and I believe in unity, so want to join this Sadbhavna started by the chief minister.”

Other sources in BJP said that as many as 50% of people who participated in the weeklong ‘Sadbhavna Week’ to spread awareness about Modi’s Sadbhavna mission in Godhra were Muslims. Sources said that over 50% of those who participated in the blood donation camps, people who offered grass to cows during the Uttarayan, and those who participated in the cycle rally were Muslims.

Muslims of Godhra participated in many events that were organised across the Panchmahals district. However, there is a section of the Muslims in the district who are not happy with the current developments. “There are many people who are not happy with the Muslims participating in the BJP rallies; however, the party doesn’t bother about them,” the source said.

A source said that around 50 Muslims would be sitting near the main stage and all of them would be allowed to walk on the stage to present gifts to Modi. “We have collected a large sum of money to donate for the ‘Beti Bachao’ fund of the chief minister and a cheque will be handed over to him on the stage,” he said.
