Delhi police today claimed to have smashed a gang involved in illegal slaughtering with the arrest of three persons and recovery of over 1,000kg of meat from 36 cattle.

Idrish Ahmed, 36, Shahnawaz, 20, and Zahid Ahmed, 19, all hailing from Bijnore in Uttar Pradesh, were apprehended from Defence Colony four days ago on a tip-off, deputy commissioner of police (South) HGS Dhaliwal said.

A jeep and 1,076kg of meat were recovered from them.

The trio told police that they were regularly supplying cattle meat in the walled city of Delhi, Meerut, Sahibabad, Ghaziabad and other cities of Uttar Pradesh.

"The illegal slaughtering of cattle is mainly done in the villages of Karehali, Hussainpur, Hatain and Neendru of Bijnore and then the chopped off meat is supplied to Delhi and UP," Dhaliwal said.

Idrish is in this illegal business for the past several years but has never been arrested. Shahnawaz got involved in these activities recently.

Zahid used to work as a driver in the vehicle used for transportation of cattle meat.
