Police in a true filmi fashion unearthed a major nexus between the illegal arms dealers, cops and army man when they caught two policemen and a Territorial Army (TA) jawan red-handed selling Pakistani weapons at Mendhar bus-stand in border district of Poonch in Jammu region.

Police said after receiving specific information that some people were selling arms in the border district, cops decided to launch a crack operation to arrest the accused. Wary of any leakage of information, the police decided to send a decoy customer to the arms sellers in a bid to catch them red handed.

“We had information that some people are selling Pakistani arms. We did not know who the people are. So we created a decoy customer and when the deal was struck, other cops immediately swung into action and arrested the trio and recovered two pistols (Pakistani make),” said Ashkoor Wani, senior superintendent of police, Poonch.  

Police was up for a big shock when the arms sellers turned out to be the army man and two cops. “We had no idea that they would be from police or army. When their identity was being ascertained, two of them turned out to be a special police official (SPO) and a follower of police department and third accused was TA man,” Wani said.

The accused have been identified as Liaqat Hussain of 156 battalion of TA, SPO Parvaiz Ahmed posted at Special Operations Group (SOG) Mendhar and Mahroof Ahmed a follower. SPO is a causal employee of a police department who gets consolidated salary of the Rs3000 monthly. Mostly the village defence committee members and former militants have been enrolled as SPOs who form an important part in the fight against militancy in Jammu region. Followers are class IV employees of police.
