A professor of human resource at IIM-Indore was brutally stabbed to death at her campus accommodation on Thursday night. She bore 12 stab wounds and an injury on her head.
Amrita Pancholi’s body was found on Friday morning after her domestic help did not get any response on ringing the bell repeatedly around 7.30 am. She then informed the gatekeeper who called the police. SP D Srinivas rushed to the spot with a police team.
“Amrita Pancholi, 32, was found lying on the floor of her bedroom. She appeared to have been stabbed with a knife or some sharp weapon,” an Indore police officer said.
Amrita was from Udaipur in Rajasthan and had been in IIM-Indore for the last one and a half years. Her family had spoken to her on Thursday night, prior to their arrival on Friday to attend a function where Amrita was to receive the youngest professor award. Amrita’s father Dr Narayan Singh Pancholi reached Indore with family on Friday morning but Amrita was not there to receive them at the airport. There was no response when they tried calling her. They then took a taxi to her quarters in the IIM campus and were stunned by the brutal scene on the spot.
IG Sanjay Rana and SSP Vipin Maheshwari said it did not appear to be a murder for robbery case. “Initial clues indicate the crime was committed by someone acquainted with the victim as there are no signs of forceful entry and her belongings, including ornaments, are not missing,” said Rana.
Amrita was wearing a gold chain and ring. She bore several stab wounds in her lower abdomen. Forensics found some footprints at the spot. The institute had hired a private security agency and outsiders were allowed entry only after signing a visitors’ register.“We are examining the register. The front door was closed but not latched from inside,” Rana said.
