If things go as per the discussions by the board of governors (BoG) at the meeting held recently at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), the premier institute may soon re-start its Post Graduate Program in Public Management and Policy (PGP-PMP). The IIMA had discontinued the one year residential course since 2010.

Sources in the BoG said that it was principal secretary of education department in Gujarat government Hasmukh Adhia, who is also state representative in the IIMA’s BoG, had proposed that the premier B-School should re-start its course to groom public sector employees’ skills.

While Adhia said he would not like to share details as it was not meant for public discussion, a source close to development elaborated on it. “As soon as the proposal to re-start the course was made, it was readily supported and accepted by the other present BoG members,” said the source. Looking at the positive response in the BoG, it won’t be an exaggeration to say the institute may soon start the PGP-PMP course, the source added.

The institute mentions that the course was meant for skill development in areas like governance, infrastructure development, public enterprise management, policy formulation and implementation to mention a few.  IIMA had started the course after it signed an MoU with the Department of Personal Training (DoPT). IIMA officials said that the course was mainly meant for officials of public sector employees; however, it also allowed 40% private sector employees’ participation in the batch.

After IIMA’s MoU to run the course for three years ended with the DoPT, they did not continue with the course. Recently, during media interaction – director of the institute Prof Samir Barua had stated that the institute did not find enough participation from the government employees and had more private employees enrolling for the course. This was one of the reasons for discontinuing of the course.

“The course was meant for grooming government employees’ skills. The DoPT used to select number of employees for the one-year course. While the institute enrolled government employees at subsidised fee, members of private sector were enrolled at a higher fee structure. As the commitment set in the MoU’s ended, the institute wanted to set new terms for fees as it had benefited government employees’ management skills, but somehow it did not reach the next level,” said an official at the IIMA.
