AHMEDABAD: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, continues to prove its class.

This year all the 28 IIM-A students who went abroad as interns got pre-placement offers from their companies.

"The offers signal a great start to the year. We're very upbeat about the interns' performance this summer," says Prof P K Sinha, chairman of the placement committee.

Apart from the number of offers, there appears to have been a step-up in the quality of offers as well, including even positions of senior analysts which are traditionally not considered entry level. Jobs have also become diverse in nature.

"Previously, foreign offers came mostly from global banking and investment companies, but now recruiters across disciplines, including manufacturing and marketing, are approaching us," says Rajiv Subramanian, student co-ordinator of the placement committee for 2005-06.

The internships were a rewarding experience for the students too. Karthik studied Thai and Indian banks for Lehman Brothers to develop strategies for investment.

"I had to make earnings projections for the next three years," he says proudly.

Shraddha Vohra, who interned with Deutsche Bank, had a versatile summer. "I was given the flexibility to decide the place and so I chose New York, the financial capital of the world. Before the internship started, we had a week's training programme in London. After that, in New York, my job profile rotated on two different sales desks of my choice," she says, adding that the variety of experiences in the two months of her internship was equivalent to a year at B-School.

The rise and rise of IIM-A

IM-A continues to outperform itself. Here is the 2005 story

28 students of IIM-A got pre-placement offers (PPO) from foreign companies. All of them worked in these places as interns

17 got pre-placement inter-views (PPI) from Indian companies

55: An all time high in terms of PPOs and PPIs for IIM-A students

3 more got PPIs from foreign companies

Certain attractive middle level and sometimes even non-entry level Senior Analyst and Associate positions are now being offered.

Diversity of job profiles on offer has also increased.

Deutsche Bank offered the post of Analyst to all the six interns it picked up in November 2004.

So did Lehman Brothers and HSBC to their three interns.

Students handled challenging live projects with their respective companies in all major financial markets — London, New York, Singapore, Hong Kong and even Tokyo.

40 per cent of placements for the batch of 2005 was with investment bankers.

*(A PPO is a job offer made by a company to a student who interned with it for the summer before the formal placement season begins)
