Britain's Lord Meghnad Desai met chief minister Narendra Modi on Monday and expressed his willingness to help the state fight climate change. He also appreciated the steps taken by the government to deal with the issue.

Desai's Idea Global (IG) will soon collaborate with the state government in order to deal with new challenges thrown up by global warming. IG is the foremost expertise in carbon market and energy.

The Gujarat government ranks number fourth in the list of governments to start a separate department for climate change; to implement projects to decrease the pollution level; achieve carbon credit and develop solar and wind power.

To help give an overview of the programmes to be undertaken by the state government to fight climate change, a video presentation was shown to Desai and his officials who were impressed by the same.

Modi welcomed the idea of IG's collaboration with the state government and providing professional expertise in the matter concerned. In the meet, Modi also talked about government's pilot project which aims at implementing the much sought after solid waste management and waste water treatment plan. This would convert state's 50 urban centres into 'green and clean' centres which would in turn earn carbon credits.

Another project aims to convert the existing coal-based power plants to gas-fired plants. Other projects target at developing solar and wind energy, organic farming and bringing a qualitative change in people's lives.

Kalpsar is another ambitious project across the Gulf of Cambay, which will reduce the distance between Mumbai and Bhavnagar by 200km.

In the conference, Modi talked about efforts to begin professional courses in order to develop human resources in new fields.
The dignitaries present at the meet also included Dr Rajivkumar Gupta, climate change secretary, AK Sharma and chief minister's secretary among others.
