Human error is said to be the main reason why seven people came into contact with radiation at Kakrapar atomic power station in Tapi district. According to top officials of the power station, employees responsible for the incident have been sent for training while a departmental inquiry has been ordered against them.

NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd) and AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) has taken serious note of the entire incident in which seven people suffered radiation. Sources said that top officials at AEC have asked employees responsible for the incident, to clarify about the error.

Sources said that three employees of Kakrapar Atomic Power station, working as supervisors are responsible for the incident. If sources are to be believed the three supervisors, responsible for discharge of spent fuel bundles at SFTD plant, completely forgot the orders issued by higher officials.  Their ignorance led to the entire situation.

“As per orders, no spend fuel was to be released in the tunnel till 1 pm. To ensure this, we sent a letter to all three and took their signatures as well. However, they forgot about the orders in the letter and switched on the refuelling system. This led to workers coming in contact with the radiation,” J P Dutta, director of atomic power station at Kakrapar, said.

According to Dutta, all three employees have been sent to training. He however, did not disclose the identity of the three employees. Meanwhile, the power station carried out a medical test on all seven workers on Sunday.  The examination found that they were not suffering from any serious symptoms of radiation. Doctors, who examined these workers, termed them as normal and healthy, with no side effects visible so far.
