The police said intelligence inputs said the HM divisional commander Mohammad Amin alias Jahangir Saroori, along with another militant, was hiding in the area. A joint team of special operation group of J&K police and troops of 11 Rashtriya Rifles officials launched an operation on Monday night.

“The militants opened fire on the forces in which one SPO, Bilal Ahmed, was killed. In a search operation, the forces destroyed a hideout of Saroori and recovered a huge quantity of food items and important documents, which are being scrutinised,” said a police spokesman.

The search continued till sunset, but no contact could be established in the forest as militants had escaped under the dense forest cover. “The search operation is being continued,” said Manish Kumar Sinha, deputy inspector general of police Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban range.
