Renuka Chowdhury flays UP govt's decision to reinstate IG who slandered Arushi's character

NEW DELHI: Looking for an opportunity to take a dig on her political rival Mayawati, minister for women and child development Renuka Chowdhury on Thursday took strong exception to the reinstatement of the Meerut inspector general (IG) Gurdarshan Singh by the Uttar Pradesh government. Singh was removed after he made statement in media about the alleged affair of Arushi Talwar with her servant Hemraj during the investigations of the Arushi murder case.

After the arrest of Arushi's father Dr Rajesh Talwar in connection with the murder, Singh had also accused him of murdering his daughter and a servant after he found them in an "objectionable" position.

Singh was transferred to Railways following an uproar over the insensitive remarks made in the Arushi murder case. Talwar was later declared innocent by the CBI.
Picking on the Uttar Pradesh government Chowdhary said she was upset over the fact the "a police officer who made irresponsible statements about a young dead girl in the media" was brought back by the UP administration.

Chowdhry said she would write a letter to UP chief minister Mayawati seeking his removal. "It is shockingly insensitive that a man who had spoken in such a manner about a minor girl has been reinstated at his position. I will write a letter to the UP chief minister asking her to remove him from the post," Chowdhury said.

Singh is just one of the reasons for Chowdhury to attack Mayawati. On Wednesday, the WCD minister made it a point to say that UP has one of the poor performing states as far as implementation of the domestic violence law was concerned. "UP has the least number of protection officers put in place," she said. The best, obviously, had to be minister's own state Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Chowdhury claims she has sought an explanation from the external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) over the allegations of sexual harassment by its woman staff.

Nisha Bhatia, a director posted at the training centre of the RAW in Gurgaon on Tuesday made a suicide bid by consuming rat poison before the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) alleging that RAW was not taking proper action against those whom she made allegations of sexual harassment.

"This is not only the mindset in RAW but in all offices where men feel it is their right to harass women. They are more encouraged by the fact that most of them get away easily. I will seek answers from the RAW on why her complaints were not listened and why she was compelled to take such a drastic step," Chowdhury said.
