A minor spat between a doctor and a class-IV employee snowballed into a clash between two groups, at new civil hospital in Surat. Hospital authorities had to intervene to cool tempers. The incident revolved around providing treatment to a burn victim.

Sheetal Patel, 30, a resident of Aaspass nagar in Godadara had sustained serious burn injuries following a stove blast on Saturday. She was shifted to new civil hospital at around  1am on Saturday night and was admitted to the hospital's Trauma Center.

Given her critical state she was immediately operated upon.

However, no class-IV employee was available on the spot and so doctors had to perform all the duties on their own. After half-an-hour, a class-IV employee Pankaj Pargi came to the ward.
Pargi was then given a sound tongue lashing by the doctors on duty - Mahendra Sharma and Vallabh Patel - for being negligent towards his work. Soon a heated argument ensued which ended with Pargi and Sharma exchanging fisticuffs.

As Patel joined Sharma, another class-IV employee, Chetan Parmar, too jumped into the fray. The brawl between the four continued for more than 20 minutes, creating havoc in the ward.

Following this the angered doctors went on strike at 2am, protesting the rude behaviour of class-IV employees. Hospital authorities including superintendent MK Wadhel rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the doctors. Finally, at 4am, Wadhel ordered the suspension of two class-IV employees, following which the doctors called off the strike and resumed duty at 5am.

Doctors and class-IV employees refused to comment on the matter.
