The thalassemic children from Junagadh, who were infected with HIV during blood transfusions, and their parents met Governor Dr Kamla on Wednesday.

The 28 children, majority of them under the age of 10 years, and their parents met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and apprised her about the entire episode. The parents blamed negligence of authorities and staff of Junagadh civil hospital, where the children used to undergo blood transfusions, for the HIV infections. They claimed that the children underwent blood transfusions only at the civil hospital.

They demanded free medical treatment and a compensation of Rs5 lakh for each of the children infected with HIV. They also demanded that appropriate steps be taken against persons responsible for the children getting infected.

The Governor lent a patient ear to the victims and the parents, and assured them that she would issue the necessary directions to relevant authorities in the state government.

Talking to reporters outside Raj Bhavan, the parents accused the state government of inaction. "It has been more than one month since the HIV infections came to light, but the government has not taken any action. The police are not even registering a FIR," said Ilyas Damar, parent of one of the infected children.

Another parent, Geeta Vallabh said that their children were infected with HIV because of negligence of hospital officials, but the government is yet to even fix their responsibility.

Junagadh mayor Satish Virada, who was accompanying the children and parents, said that the state government was talking about Sadbhavna, but had not shown any towards the innocent children. "The government should immediately announce compensation of Rs5 lakh for each of the infected child if it has any Sadbhavna," he said.
