Heroin worth Rs16 crore hidden in fruit crates was today seized here by police.
The contraband was recovered when a fruit-seller found a wooden crate containing pomegranates to be too heavy even after emptying it, SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said.
He removed the newspaper at the bottom and was shocked to find two packets of heroin lying underneath, he said.
He immediately called up police who confiscated the consignment and later discovered that it had been supplied to the fruit merchant by an Afghan national, the official said.
The matter is being investigated, he added.
