Actor-politician Chiranjeevi became the latest target of Telangana supporters on Wednesday after his Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) hinted at joining the united Andhra agitation.
As soon as the news that PRP was likely to issue a statement against Telangana spread, the joint action committee of Osmania and Kakatiya universities declared that it would block the of films produced by Geeta Arts, the production house of Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law Allu Aravind, and all other films featuring members of the actor’s family.
To prove that they were not making an empty threat, the protesters damaged theatres screening Arya 2, a film with Aravind’s son Allu Arjun in the lead.
Chiranjeevi was engaged in a meeting with party leaders on finalising PRP’s Telangana stand. He was expected to make a statement on Wednesday, but party spokesman Sravan said the decision had been put off for now to be reviewed after a fortnight. PRP has all through maintained that it is committed to the formation of Telangana. However, after the Centre’s decision in favour of the proposed state, 15 of its 18 MLAs, including Chiranjeevi, resigned. Under pressure from non-Telangana cadres, the party is now planning to change its position.
