Heavy, incessant rains and powerful winds due to a deep depression  since Thursday night, paralysed normal life, triggering disasters in Bengal, especially in East Midnapur and South 24 Parganas where 33 trawlers with 551 fishermen went missing.

Speaking to DNA, Alipur weather office director Dr Gokul Debnath said: “The deep depression formed in Bay of Bengal on Thursday, now lying 30 km from Kolkata is likely to result in heavy rainfall till Saturday and weather may improve only on Sunday.’’

Dr Debnath, however, said that the depression “has actually fetched the Southwest monsoon for Bengal this year.’’ Elaborating his point that the downpour was heavy, he said “from 8 am to 2.30 pm, according to records, it rained 100 mm.’’ In Kolkata, power cuts, coupled with heavy water logging pushed normal life to a standstill.
