City police on Sunday conducted multiple raids at various hotels and rest houses in Kalupur following evidences that Pakistan-born US citizen David Coleman Headley - arrested in Chicago by the FBI last month - had visited Ahmedabad thrice between 2006 and 2009 and stayed at the minority-dominated areas of Kalupur.

Headley visited Ahmedabad once for 18 hours; then for a day and on the third occasion for two days. The raids conducted on Saturday night and Sunday morning comprised combing operations and searching various places including 270 hotels and guest houses, 126 gardens, six religious places and interrogating 183 history-sheeters.

Earlier, there were reports that Headley had reconnoitered the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) and  had also prepared a map of the campus.

Meanwhile state police chief, DGP SS Khandwawala on Saturday said, "We have almost confirmed information about Headley and his accomplice's visit to Gujarat and their stay in Ahmedabad for a couple of days."

Based on this information, Gujarat police have constituted a team of officials from the Anti Terrorist Squad and some hand-picked local senior police officers for this purpose. The Gujarat police are also in constant touch with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which had recently registered a case against Headley and his associate Tahawwur Hussain Rana as well as the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

Headley, along with his partner, Rahil Abdul Rehman Sheikh, ran a travel services firm, which is suspected to have helped many terrorists in Maharashtra and Gujarat escape from the country illegally.

Central intelligence agencies have also came across information that indicates that the travel firm may have helped the commander of Simi, Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer, and Riyaz Batkal escape from the country after the serial blasts in Ahmedabad.
