After Swine Flu, it seems to be the turn of the dreaded Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) to rear its head in the state.

Dr Smiral Parikh, 29, a resident working in the medicine department of VS Hospital in the city died of a suspected case of CCHF. Dr Parikh was admitted to Sterling Hospital where he died at around 1.45 am on Friday Morning.

An official of Sterling Hospital said that Dr Parikh was suspected to have CCFH. “His blood samples were sent for testing, and the results are still awaited,” said the official.
However, a source in the state health department already feels it is a case of CCHF.

“Following Dr Parikh’s death we have identified the people who had come in contact with him. We are closely monitoring all of them. Their vitals are being measured twice a day,” said the source.

The officer said that Dr Parikh had performed a surgical procedure on a patient, who was likely under intubations and that could have been a potential source of infection.
“However it cannot be said without investigation that the patient was indeed infected from the disease.”

A Sterling Hospital official said that as they suspected CCHF, they had taken all the necessary precautions while treating Dr Parikh.

Badruddin Sheikh, leader of the Opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), has sought compensation for the doctor and said the government needs to have necessary a set up in place for earlier identification of such diseases.

CCHF, a deadly virus with a mortality of 30% to 90% was detected for the first time in India, when 30-year-old Amina Momin, a resident of Korat Village in Sanand succumbed to the illness on January 3, 2011.

She was initially treated at Sterling Hospital and later moved to Shalby Hospital. The doctor treating Momin, 32-year-old Dr Gaganjeet Sharma, too succumbed to the illness followed by a nurse, Asha John who was attending to the patient.
Momin’s kin were also found to be having symptoms of the disease but they survived.
