Haryana in talks with neighbouring states to tackle floods

The Haryana government is holding talks with its neighbouring states, especially Punjab, to evolve a roadmap for regulating and managing the waterflow in major rivers during the rainy season in the wake of the recent devastating floods.

The state government is in talks with the neighbouring states for formulating measures to ensure that the people in the region are not affected by nature's flood fury in future, principal secretary, revenue department, Naresh Gulati said today.

Haryana is contemplating a long-term scheme for the cleaning and de-silting of various canals and enforcement of the banks of the river Ghaggar and the Rangoi stream to prevent floods, he told reporters in Sirsa.

The recent floods have claimed 26 lives besides damaging standing crops worth crores.

Gulati reviewed the relief and rescue measures being undertaken by the Sirsa administration.

Meanwhile, the process of the assessment of the loss in 34,544 acres out of total 60,493 acres of the flood-affected area in Sirsa district was completed, he said, adding it found cent per cent damage to crops in the areas.

Gulati visited the various flood-affected areas of district Sirsa including village Bani, Narel Khera, Moriwala, Dhani Satnam, Rania, Ottu Weir and Kariwala.
