Terming as "immoral" the use of hartals and bandhs on the part of political parties in the state, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor today said Keralites should give a serious thought on ending this culture for the state's development.
It was "immoral" on the part of political parties in present days to use the mode of agitation, which was a tactical method employed to fight the British imperial rule, he said at the Nehru Jayanthi celebrations jointly organised by Nehru Centre and Russian Cultural Centre.
"What is needed now is work and not rest, development and not hartals. A few persons may not be interested in going to offices and schools on a hartal day. But do they have any right to prevent others from going to work," Tharoor, the Thiruvananthapuram MP, said.
He said Jawaharlal Nehru had the same view on agitations like hartals. The legacy of the great man should not be kept by following him blindly, but by keeping the essence of his life and message, Tharoor said.
The Congress today was continuing the legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru who founded the four pillars on which India could sustain itself. Democratic values, economic planning, foreign policy and secularism were the four core issues successfully addressed by Nehru, he said.
