Arif Sayed's shooters Sayed Bilal and Indra Khatri were receiving instructions from one Umed Khan alias Rehman Bhai alias Raju over the mobile phone.
Following the firing at Pakmodia Street in south Mumbai on Tuesday in which Arif Sayed, the bodyguard of Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar was shot dead, interrogation of his shooters Sayed Bilal and Indra Khatri has revealed that they were receiving instructions from one Umed Khan alias Rehman Bhai alias Raju over the mobile phone. Rehman’s location was found in Navi Mumbai on the day of the firing, police sources said.
He is also believed to be involved in the Kala Ghoda shootout in 2006 in which two police informers were shot dead in broad daylight. In a late night development, gangster Chhota Rajan told a news channel that he ordered the killing through Rehman.
According to police sources, Rehman is a resident of Mumbra and runs a cutlery shop in the Crawford Market area. “Based on their information, five persons known as Rehman who have shops in Crawford Market were called in for questioning on Wednesday, but they did not seem to be the person we were looking for,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.
The police have also questioned around a dozen people from Mumbra and Nagpada areas, but haven’t got any concrete information about the person who had ordered the killing, sources said.
The sources said that it is suspected that Bilal knew Rehman since long and is putting the investigations off track. “It has been learnt that Rehman was in regular touch with Khatri and Bilal over the phone. But when we got the description of Rehman from them, both were different. We are going with the description made according to Khatri’s narration,” the source said.
The police had seized three mobile phones from Bilal and Khatri.
“International phone numbers and Rehman’s number was found from the mobile phone seized from Bilal. On inquiring further, it was learnt that Rehman had procured the said SIM card from outside Mumbai two months ago by submitting bogus documents.
“We are zeroing in on Rehman and are likely to apprehended him soon. It has been learnt that Rehman had made stay arrangements for Khatri in a Nagpada guest house. We suspect that someone from Nagpada is involved in the crime,” said a police source.
