A Kolkata fast track court sentenced on Friday Haldiram Prabhuji confectionary chain owner Prabhu Shankar Agarwal to life imprisonment. The convict was charged with conspiring to murder a tea stall owner’s nephew.

Justice Tapan Sen ordered a similar punishment for four others involved in the conspiracy, including two sharp-shooters Gopal Tiwari and Manoj Sharma. The convicts have decided to appeal at a higher court against the order.

Expressing satisfaction over the judgment, Pramod Sharma, the nephew of the tea-stall owner Satya Narayan Singh, who survived a bullet injury during the murder attempt, said he finally got justice, though late.

The conspiracy was a result of fight the between Singh and Agarwal since 1996. Agarwal, who planned to open a restaurant-cum-food court at the busy Burabazar locality in central Kolkata, tried to pursue Singh to vacate the place where the tea stall stood, as it allegedly blocked the entrance of the proposed construction. But Singh refused to budge and the matter went to court.

In 2005, Agarwal and his associates once again tried to pursue Singh, offering him a compensation of Rs4 lakh, which didn’t work. The refusal prompted Agarwal to mastermind the murder. He hired sharp-shooters Gopal and Manoj and went to the tea stall on March 30, 2005. They fired at Pramod, Singh’s nephew, who survived the bullet injury.
