A gutkha manufacturer has sought permission from Gujarat high court to join a PIL seeking ban on plastic pouches used in packaging of gutkha and other products. The manufacturer claims that his company too is an affected party in the case.
Rashmin Jani, counsel for the petitioner, said: "The matter has been adjourned till next Thursday as one of the gutkha manufacturers has sought the high court permission to join the petition."
The division bench comprising acting chief justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice JB Pardiwala gave a week's time for the same.
The court was hearing a PIL seeking a ban on the use of plastic pouches to pack gutkha, pan masala, milk and other eatable products.
Petitioner Prakash Kapadia had submitted before the court that the plastic pouches used for packaging these items contained vinyle chloride, a hazardous substance. This was found following a test conducted by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET).
At that time the high court had asked the petitioner to verify whether the Supreme Court's guidelines on a similar issue were breached in the state.
