Disregarding the grave inconvenience being caused to thousands of people due to the troubled railway and road traffic in the northern states, the agitating Gujjar community is awaiting the Rajasthan government’s response to their demand for providing 5% quota in job as recommended by the IS Irani committee last year.

That the state government has engaged a top constitutional lawyer of the Supreme Court, PP Rao, to make his submission before the Rajasthan high court on Wednesday is an indication that the Gehlot government is favourably inclined to the demands of the community.

Gujjars want the quota in job and education by deducting 4% from the OBC’s share and 1% under the government’s power.

An influential Gujjar leader Ram Bir Singh Bidhuri, who heads the All India Gujjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti, said the community shouldn’t indulge in violence.

“Violence isn’t answer to a problem. Let’s wait for the outcome of the court dispensation,” he said.

The Gujjar population of India is nearly 5.3 crores. The community is found mainly in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, northern Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Maharashtra.

A parliamentary standing committee has recommended to the government to carry out a survey to assess the size of different communities in the total population of the country.
