The much-awaited new information and communication technology (ICT) policy is likely to be announced in the next fortnight by the Gujarat government before Vibrant Gujarat 2013 summit begins.

The previous information technology (IT) policy of Gujarat was launched in 2006 and was to be in operation till 2011. It has been extended till the new policy is announced.
According to a source close to the development, the policy was scheduled to be launched this year itself. But due to elections and the implementation of the model code of conduct, the policy has been on hold for the past two months.

The ICT industry of Gujarat is expecting the state government to announce some incentives and subsidies for IT companies. “Incentives and subsidies may be offered but not to existing companies. The policy is made to attract new business, new companies and new industry. The companies which are already there in Gujarat are established and may not need state government support,” said the source.

He added that with the new ICT policy, the state government wants to once again lay the red carpet for new companies.

Interestingly, the policy will cater less to the conventional IT and ITeS sector. “The policy will not target software development, BPO or KPO sector. This time we want to focus on electronic system and design manufacturing (ESDM) sector. It is a new field in IT which will change the face of industry in the state. Simultaneously, we also want to focus on the animation and gaming sector,” said the source.

According to him, at present, there is demand for mobile application, gaming application and others. “The policy will encourage companies across the world to come to Gujarat,” he said.
