The first Nano to be allotted by Tata Motors will go to 96-year-old Homai Vyarawala of Vadodara. Vyarawala, India’s first woman photo-journalist, has been offered the first Nano by a Tata Motors dealer of Vadodara.

Vyarawala is sufficiently fit even in her nineties to drive a car on her own. “Two days back, some officials of Tata Motors had come to my place and said the company had decided to allot me a Nano on a priority basis,” she said.

“Ever since I sold my Fiat, which was with me for some 55 years, I was in search of a similar small car. I will be happy to have the Nano for my transportation.” She further said that she was keen to have a Nano but was not sure if she would be one of the lucky ones to get one of the first Nanos to be allotted.

The allotment of the first Nanos has been done on the basis of a lucky draw. “I have been given a letter authorised by Debasish Roy, chief of communications for Tata Motors, confirming that I will be getting a Nano,” said Vyarawala. She has already deposited Rs95,000 with Tata Motors through cheque for her Nano. Vyarawala, however, is not overwhelmed that she is the first person in the country to get a Nano. For her, the important thing is that the car will solve her commuting problems.

“For me a car is something that will take care of my transportation needs,” she said. “I stay alone and don’t like to bother others to get my things done. I needed a car to go to the market as I can no longer carry heavy bags on my own.” She said she used to own a Fiat earlier but had to sell it as it required a great deal of maintenance.

“I wasn’t sure I would be among the first to be allotted a Nano,” she said, “but now I am happy that Tata Motors has allotted one to me.”
