Although today the Gujarati film industry is not going great guns, it is witnessing a trend where filmmakers are coming forward with fresh ideas to lift the spirit of cinema.

In one such attempt, a former Ayurvedic doctor KR Devmani from Ahmedabad has directed a Gujarati film on the subject of homosexuality that is set to release in September in Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

The film is titled Meghadhanushya. The colour of life and is currently in the post-production stage.

“This is the first time that I have ventured into direction and that too with a controversial subject. This is probably the first film in Gujarati based on the struggle a man goes through when he comes out of the closet,” Devmani says. The idea came to him as he wanted to make something offbeat and yet entertain the audience, he adds.

The film is set in urban Gujarat with a blend of professional actors and some from the Mumbai theatre industry. They were selected after an audition. The film is divided into three parts starting from the actor’s childhood to his youth when his family tries to persuade him to get married right up to his old age.

Did you approach any stars of the Gujarati film industry and what were their reactions? “They told me that after a long time they would be doing a meaningful film that would give them creative satisfaction.

We have chosen new faces as well who otherwise don’t get a platform to show their talent. A new boy from Vadodara has done such a brilliant job that the audience would be amazed to see him perform on screen.”

“I don’t want to provoke any controversy through the film but just want to highlight the internal conflict a man goes through in a positive light. The film shows what a person feels when people make fun of his sexuality. It is disheartening, yet emotional,” says the director.

He took directorial assistance from veteran theatre actor Hasmukh Baradi. He also says the music of the film is very much rooted in the soil of the state and he has used poems with background music instead of songs to convey a message.

The film is shot largely in Ahmedabad and the cast includes some Gujarati actors like Alpana Majumdar, Asha Panchal and Jeet. It is an offbeat film but a family entertainer.
