The Gujarati diamond trader, who was found brutally killed at his Antwerp home on Monday morning, was murdered by his son, the latter confessed before the Antwerp police. The police also seized the murder weapon and evidence to nail the killer son.

Pravin Patel, 54, a resident of Van Van Eycklei in Antwerp, was found murdered on Monday morning. A native of Gadhada in Bhavnagar, Patel had moved to Antwerp some 20 years ago, and was a successful diamond trader.

Patel’s murder had spread shock waves in the Gujarati community in Antwerp, but it has now emerged that he was killed by his elder son Rashmin. Rashmin confessed to his crime when confronted with the murder evidence by Antwerp police.

Santosh Kedia, president of Antwerp Indian Association, said the crime was shocking, but refused to comment further saying it was a family matter.

Rashmin had earlier claimed that his father was attacked by three Africans who had come to the house with intent to steal. He claimed that he too sustained injuries in trying to protect his father. However, the police did not buy the story and suspected his involvement in the crime from the very beginning.

Media reports in Antwerp said Rashmin’s lie was nailed when police recovered the knife used in the murder as well as his blood-stained clothes from the basement of the house. Rashmin, who was associated with his father’s diamond business, confessed his involvement in the crime when confronted with the incriminating evidence.

He told the police that he had attacked his father with a knife following a heated argument between them. He said his father had tried to defend himself, but in vain, and he died on the spot.

Rashmin quickly changed his blood-stained clothes, and hid them along with the murder weapon. He then concocted the story about the African robbers attacking his father.
