Gujarat University students might just have an answer to all the terrorist threats that the aviation industry of the country is plagued with constantly.

A research paper submitted by two post graduate students Heena Goswami and Neelam Jhaveri have won the first prize in the Forensic Science Conference organised at the Punjab Technical University (PTU) recently.

The paper entitled, 'Analytical Instruments used for the detection of Explosive Materials to Counter Terrorism Attacks in Aviation Securities,' was adjudged the best amongst the 200 papers presented nationally and internationally during the conference by a panel of judges.

Speaking about the research done for the paper, the students said that they have tried to put across the point that even certain brands of toothpastes available in the market contain potassium nitrate which has the potential to blow up just like an explosive. They added that they have tried explaining through the paper that by installing certain instruments at the security check points at airports such potential threats can be prevented.

"Currently although security checks are conducted, most of them miss out on determining contents like potassium nitrate in certain brands of toothpastes, but by installation of machines like  Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrascopy  (FTIR)  and Ion Exchange Cromotography (IC)  such mishaps can be averted,'' said one of the students Heena Goswami.

They pointed out that certain brands of toothpaste which contain potassium nitrate are used by people and carried in luggage bags at airports, but they go unchecked.

"To ascertain the level of potassium nitrate present in these brands of toothpaste, we tested the levels in the instruments at our department's laboratory and also got it verified by experts from the field,'' said another student Neelam Jhaveri.

The students said that their research paper also stressed on the need of generating awareness about such facts amongst commoners. "We have also designed awareness generating posters which were displayed during the conference,'' said Jhaveri.

Kapil Kumar who had guided the students for the presentation of research paper said that they had done a lot of research work before making their conclusions.

Vice-chancellor of Gujarat University Dr Parimal Trivedi said that the university encourages such research work and see to it that students get enough exposure for heir efforts.

He said, "This is the reason that the university was seeing to it that they invest on such courses which are creating avenues and generating  employment as well.”
