The state's experiment with activity-based learning to educate primary school students using charts and games has yielded positive results. It has shown significant changes in children’s interest in attending schools. After successful implementation of activity-based learning in Std 1 to 4 in schools across Gujarat, state education department is all set to introduce it in 1,200 more schools in rural and urban parts.

The activity-based learning was introduced in state two years back under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). In the activity-based learning, students do not have to study in a traditional class room format of teaching but are taught curriculum using informal methods of teaching. Some of these include teaching through charts, games, interaction and students are not stressed with the burden of exam, said Manoj Agarwal, project director of SSA.

"We have observed that activity-based learning reduced study strain on students. Children are more receptive as they learn things through activity-based learning. The feedbacks that we get from parents of students and also experts have shown the positive changes from the experiment. So, after successful experiment, in the third year of the project we will extend the activity-based learning technique in more schools from the starting academic year," he said.

He added that since there are no exams in activity-based teaching method, students feel more relaxed and learn fearlessly. He also said that the preparations to extend it to 1,200 more schools are also at full swing. He also said that course module and teachers' training are also completed.

According to him, many other states also visit Gujarat to see implementation of the activity-based learning. He added, initially it was introduced in 250 schools in Std 1 and 2. After finding positive feedback, it was extended to Std 3 and 4 in 250 schools and in Std 1 and 2 in more 2,500 schools. With, extending the system in more 1,200 schools, Gujarat will have activity based learning method in place nearly 4,000 schools.
