The state received a three-day respite from heavy rains. But the relief, it seems, will be short-lived as rains are likely to strike again. The India meteorological department (IMD) on Saturday issued a warning of heavy rainfall across Gujarat in the next 48 hours. This may not be good news for farmers as the state has already received 87% of its annual seasonal rainfall, 46% more than what it usually receives by August 7.

"The Gujarat region, which mainly comprises of Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara and Gandhinagar, has so far received 60% of its average rainfall, while the Saurashtra and Kutch region has got 145% of the seasonal rainfall," said Kamaljit Ray, director, IMD. "Most of the districts in the Saurashtra and Kutch region have crossed the seasonal average," she added.

Heavy rains are expected in the next 48 hours in view of the low pressure area in north-west direction towards Madhya Pradesh, Ray stated, adding that rains would decrease in intensity thereafter.

Incidentally, the situation in the 32 flood-hit villages in Jamnagar, Porbandar and Kutch has normalised.

But it may worsen if heavy rains, as predicted by the IMD, recur. The government has also geared up to face any eventuality, said a source from the Flood Control Cell.

Gujarat normally gets 417.9 mm rains by August 7, but this year it has already received 611 mm of rainfall, which is 46 % more than the average, the state weather office stated.

Also, because of rainfall, 52 out of the 196 dams in the state have been declared as completely filled.

The Saurashtra and Kutch region has got 660.8 mm rainfall till August 7. This is 111% more than its normal rainfall of 313.3 mm till date. The Gujarat region, on the other hand, has received 553.0 mm rainfall till August 7. It normally gets 557.1 mm rains till this time, which means that the rainfall is only 1% less than the usual.
