After the state government's 'Chalo Taluke' campaign ends on Saturday, the next big government event in the state is Garib Kalyan Mela (GKM) 2011.

This time apart from other schemes and benefits, Mission Mangalam will be the highlight of GKM 2011. Bank loans of more than Rs1,000 crore will be given to the two lakh Self Help Groups (SHG) in the state covering more than 25 lakh women.

Sources in the state government said, "Last year, apart from 50 GKMs in the first phase, 292 melas were organised at taluka level in the second phase.  This year there will be 301 GKMs in the state, of which 224 will be organised in rural areas and 77 in urban areas."

The official added, "We have come to know that Choryasi taluka of Surat has 62 villages under its administration. So this year there will be a mela there."

During last year's GKMs, 1.5 lakh BPL families were given land for free and other assistance to build a house.  Aid of Rs4859.24 crore was given to 37.69 lakh people in the state under a variety of government schemes from the GKM platform. These include housing, livelihood support, agriculture related, maternal and child welfare and social welfare schemes.

So, what is new in GKM-2011? The official replied, "This year the state government is focusing on the Mission Mangalam programme. Of course, there will be other schemes for beneficiaries like last year."

Sources in the Gujarat Livelihood Promotion Company (GLPC) also indicated that the procedure for finalising bank loans for SHGs has been prioritised keeping GKM in the mind. "We are aiming to provide minimum Rs50,000 to maximum Rs1 lakh cash loans for SHGs," said an official of GLPC.

During the last GKM more than 13.87 lakh women and more than 22.87 lakh men were given assistance from government schemes.
