October 17, 2011 was a red letter dthe power sector of Gujarat, as power plants in the state generated the highest-ever power on the day.ay for  The increased power generation is attributed to higher demand from various segments, mainly agriculture and industry.

State energy minister Saurabh Patel said power plants in the state generated 11,209 MW or 252 Million Units (MUs) of power in a single day on Monday.

“The power demand from agriculture sector was to the tune of 70 MUs, up from an average of 62 MUs, while demand from industries was at 62 MUs, as against average of 50 - 51 MUs,” Patel said. The minister said the demand from both agriculture and industry was the highest ever on Monday, while demand from residential and other segments had also gone up. He said an average Plant Load Factor (PLF) of power plants in the state was at 85% in October, as against annual average of 79%.

He attributed the lower average PLF to the fact that a number of plants were shut for maintenance earlier this year. Patel said record generation of power had been achieved in the state in spite of backing down of 5.87 million units of LNG-generated power. "LNG prices have increased to $16 per Million Metric British Thermal Units (MMBTU). The variable cost of power generated using LNG works out to be Rs8.50 per unit, which is not feasible, and hence power generation is being shut during non-peak hours," Patel said.

Incidentally, wind power output, which is around 8 to 10 million units a day on an average, also fell to just above 2.03 MUs on Monday.

"There are problems related to power availability throughout the country, but we are in a comfortable position. Coal supplies in the state are adequate to last for a month or so," he added.
