Organisations working for dalit and tribal rights in various parts of the state aims to set up a shadow assembly post 2012 assembly elections to ensure that their rights are not trampled upon by the new government. They have also come up with a manifesto that puts forth several of their demands, primary among which is right to the land allotted to them.

Voicing grievances at a function, leaders from the community like Ganpat Vasava, from Dangs said, that Dalits have land only on paper. “But Dalits and tribals have not been given right to the land. They are threatened if they go to till their land. Even the NREGA scheme is of no use as villagers have not been paid for close to two years,” he alleged.

Bakul Parmar of the Jan Adhikar Jumbesh, Amreli lamented that dalits are migrating to cities in search of land. “In several villages dalits don’t even have land to cremate their dead,” he lamented.
