It seems the Chinese government and the Communist Party of China (CPC) see Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Sources in the delegation which accompanied Modi to China said they were amazed at the importance given to the chief minister’s visit by the Chinese.

Modi’s close aides believe that the Chinese, having seen all-round development in Gujarat, wanted to have a better understanding of him as he may emerge as the top BJP leader in the 2014 polls in India.

The warmth with which the delegation was received in China remained undiminished on all the five days the chief minister was there. For Modi himself, there was nothing new in this trip as this was his fourth visit to China, the third as chief minister.

Yet even Modi could not help being impressed by the overwhelming respect with which he was received by the Chinese, said a member of the visiting delegation.

Special arrangements had been made for Modi’s reception, escort, banquets, visits and security. No less impressive was the high level of meetings arranged for him, the source said.
Interestingly, Modi was received at the Great Hall of People in Beijing where normally heads of state or heads of national governments are received. His visit generated a huge interest in the Chinese business and industrial community and in the country’s political leadership as well, the source said.

“It was unbelievable to see that on all the five days, all routes through which we passed were sealed to other traffic. Such a response was not seen during the chief minister’s previous visits to that country,” said another member of the delegation.

The delegation returned on Sunday after spending five days in China. For most delegation members, one of the high points of the visit was their tour of the Yangshan Deep Water Port near Shanghai.

“It seems that the Gujarat government is very keen to
develop similar infrastructure either at Kalpasar or at
Narmada,” said the delegation member.
